George Saunders

Lincoln in the Bardo | George Saunders | Literary Roadhouse Bookclub Ep 15

Discussion Notes: Lincoln in the Bardo

Next month’s novel: The Heirs by Susan Rieger

Rated: Explicit

The bookclub read the 2017 Man Booker Prize winner Lincoln in the Bardo by George Saunders. The hosts are split with Anais vehemently defending a novel she loved that Gerald disliked and Maya found disappointing, even as she saw its merits. While Gerald liked the beginning, it quickly went downhill for him, while Maya felt the experiment didn’t quite pan out. Anais  enjoyed the book so much and found it so funny that she, while reading, yelped with excitement.

And you?

We’d like to hear from you

Did we miss something? Let us know what you think of the novel in the comment section below. Or, if you prefer, leave a voicemail by clicking on the feature to the right. By the way, we may play your voicemail on our next show, so tell us if you would prefer we did not.

We air the first Friday of every month, and discuss the books on Twitter between shows using #LRHBookclub.

Discussing Escape From Spiderhead | George Saunders | Literary Roadhouse Ep 52

Next week’s story is Thank You Ma’am by Langston Hughes

Rated PG-13 for Adult Themes

Tamara WoodsThis week Tamara Woods joins us as a guest co-host. She is new to the Literary Roadhouse family and will be the host of an upcoming show. You can find out more about Tamara, her poetry and the Reverie Journal at tamarawoodsauthor.com

Escape from Spiderhead is a story about a many who is part of clinical drug trials as part of his imprisonment. As we analyze the story, we discussed questions of consent, murder, and the definition of love. Maya, Anais and Gerald all loved the story, but both Tamara and Rammy had issues being sucked into the story, or with George Saunders use of languag. Rammy found it a bit explicit for his taste.

Don’t forget to rate the story! For the history of our goofy system, see Anais’ post “Read Short Stories or Ray Bradbury Cries.” On a scale of 1-6 Bradberries, how do you rate Escape from Spiderhead? This episode was full of announcements! First, if you were around the website last week you’ll know that it kept going down. That was because I was hard at work breaking making a entirely new website. While much of the site looks the same, it should be faster and better able to handle the upcoming launch of our second podcast. Anais will be leading the Literary Roadhouse bookclub! It will be a monthly bookclub and our first novel is… The Heart Goes Last by Margaret Atwood! You can get your copy here. We’ll be reading the book through November/December and the first episode will be the first Thursday in January. So grab a copy, and tweet along with #LRHBookclub

Who knew George Saunders was so funny and brilliant, and why didn’t you tell us. Everyone except Rammy was blown away by this story but he kept us from floating away into a love fest. We talk about the laughter, the sadness, masculinity and when art get’s in the way of consumption.
